The Vero Heritage Center and Citrus Museum has announced a summer fundraiser raffle for a cornhole set as unique as Indian River Citrus!
From the early 1900s to the 1950s, citrus labels were printed cheaply and pasted on the ends of wooden shipping crates. The labels distinguished one grove’s product from another catching the eye of potential buyers in dimly let, cold northern auction houses in the winter.
The more colorful the better – tropical waters, swaying palm trees and bathing beauties helped, too! When packing companies switched to cardboard, there was no longer a need for labels. Packers printed directly on to the cardboard.
Today, authentic labels have become collectors’ items - some of the more rare labels fetch unbelievable sums. Capitalizing on the interest in crate labels, the nonprofit Vero Heritage, Inc is excited to announce our next summer fundraiser: chances to win Custom Cornhole Boards!
Cornhole is a popular lawn game in which players or teams take turns throwing bean bags at a raised, angled board with a hole in its far end. The goal of the game is to score points by either landing a bag on the board or putting a bag through the hole. The Vero Heritage Center & Citrus Museum has created a citrus label inspired cornhole boards featuring beautiful collaging of the colorful vintage labels and plans to raffle this one-of-a-kind set.
The drawing will be held during August's Downtown Friday in Vero Beach on August 26, 2022 at 8 PM. Entrants do not need to be present to win. If you'd like own a unique and fun piece of Indian River citrus history you can enter to win HERE.
