A Season of Milestones for Performing Arts

The 2022-2023 performing arts season on the Treasure Coast back with another year of great entertainment and several notable milestone celebration years for our local venues and organizations. Here’s a sneak peek at what will be happening on area stages beginning this fall and continuing into 2023.

Sunrise Theatre, Fort Pierce

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sunrise Theatre opened its doors in 1923 and will celebrate its 100th year this season! This October opens with America’s favorite trickster, Michael Carbonaro with his new show, Lies on Stage. Up next is the Southern Soul Music Festival and the month closes out with a screening of the original, unedited Rocky Horror Picture Show accompanied by a shadow cast. In November, Florida native and comedian Daniel Tosh will tickle locals with his Florida Trash Tour. December brings Three Dog Night in concert, and kid-friendly Blues Clues & You to the stage in a live interactive experience, followed by Swan Lake, performed by The State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine. The Sunrise Theatre has more than 20 performances and concerts scheduled for the season. Check the entire calendar at sunrisetheatre.com.

Riverside Theatre, Vero Beach

Yet another big year for another big venue as Riverside Theatre enters its 50th season. The Treasure Coast’s only professional theatre opens its golden anniversary year on the Stark Stage in October with Leonard Gershe’s romcom Butterflies are Free. In January, patrons can “Dream the Impossible Dream” with iconic musical Man of La Mancha. Next up will be Ken Ludwig’s uproarious madcap tale, A Comedy of Tenors. In April don’t miss the song and dance extravaganza 42nd Street, and close out the season by celebrating the women of country music with Honkey Tonk Angels by Ted Swindly. Along with Comedy Zone shows, the Waxlax stage will also feature Bakersfield Mist by Stephen Sachs, a new-comedy drama inspired by true events, and Oleanna, a drama by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet. As always, Live in the Loop free concerts will continue most weekends on Fridays and Saturdays with casual dining and drinks. Visit riversidetheatre.com for details.

Ballet Vero Beach

This professional ballet company, celebrating its 10th season, stole hearts with a magnificent interpretation of a holiday classic with Nutcracker on the Indian River starting five years ago. This year the critically acclaimed full theatrical production returns with performances in late December. In January, Tastemakers will celebrate dance makers whose unique voices resonate through the dance world today. February features and exceptional program celebrating the legacy of one of the most revolutionary dance companies of all time, the Ballets Russes. The mainstage season will close in April with an ode to the greatest influence on Artistic Director/CEO Adam Schnell’s life in dance, the late choreographer Samuel Kurkjian. Ballet Vero Beach also offers a unique Accessible/Family Friendly Series. These extra special hour-long performances are specifically geared to the needs of the differently abled individuals, and young children. This season will include Nutcracker for All, Tastemakers, Firebird, and The Sleeping Princess. To learn more, visit balletverobeach.org.

The Barn Theatre

Stuart’s oldest community theatre opens its 52nd season in September with a show with a laugh-out-loud musical for mature audiences only. Avenue Q is similar to a beloved children’s show but is filled with gut busting adult humor and a delightfully catchy score. Next up in November, based on the 1985 Paramount movie inspired by a board game, Clue is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. The Barn will ring in the new year with a well-timed performance of the smash hit Grease. The beloved 1983 Broadway hit, La Cage Aux Folles will take the stage in March of 2023. In May, it’s Songs for a New World, an abstract show that straddles the space between a musical and a song cycle. The season closes with The Wedding Singer, based on Adam Sandler’s famous romantic comedy.
